Publicado originalmente en una pequea tirada slo en CD en su propio sello Animal en agosto de 2000 y acreditado a Avey Tare & Panda Bear antes de que se utilizara el nombre completo del grupo en los lanzamientos, Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished ha sido elogiado por Vulture y descrito por Pitchfork como “una pieza magistral de msica electroacstica de cuento de hadas”. El lbum se abre con la frase “want to hear a secret, I know one”, sugiriendo que estos secretos podran estar enterrados en lo ms profundo de las bandadas de altas frecuencias, glitches electrnicos, bleeps y swells que siguen. El enfoque del do es similar al de Love (circa Forever Changes), con la guitarra acstica de Avey Tare fluyendo en perfecta sncopa con la batera de Panda Bear. Pero las capas de electrnica tonal y atonal que engordan el fino pulso de la visin del compositor hacen que este lbum se parezca ms a algo cercano a la composicin electrnica moderna. Las canciones van desde piezas rpidas de patchwork a melodas de piano ms lentas, un tipo de msica psicodlica coherente pero muy frgil; su dominio de los ganchos pop y la dinmica se ve contrarrestado por un amor por el ruido / la friccin y la anarqua musical; sus canciones oscilan en la cuerda floja entre la belleza profundamente conmovedora y el caos desenfrenado.
El arte incluye nuevas ilustraciones de Abby y Dave Portner. La decena de canciones ahora remasterizadas desde las cintas originales, junto a otras cinco del EP ‘A Night at Mr. Raindrop’s Holistic Supermarket’, entre ellas una versin de “Dreams” de Fleetwood Mac, grabadas en la misma poca y mezclados por Deakin, futuro miembro de Animal Collective.
