El simple hecho de que Stephen Malkmus, una de las figuras ms importantes de la msica independiente, decidiese continuar su carrera tras Pavement escribiendo seis maravillosos lbumes con The Jicks, sin mirar atrs, ya es toda una confirmacin de que enfrentarnos al sptimo largo de la banda va a ser todo un honor. Al fin podemos anunciar Sparkle Hard, un tratado de cmo entender un legado histrico sin perder la identidad, sin caer en tpicos y lugares comunes, y hacindolo con mucha elegancia y disfrutando.
La banda formada por el propio Malkmus, Mike Clark (teclados), Joanna Bolme (bajo) y Jake Morris (batera) presenta un trabajo fresco, directo, que sabe mantener los elementos caractersticos de un msico fundamental en la historia reciente, pero que sabe adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos y espacios, e incluso a los elementos ms insospechados: Auto-Tune, violines, una cancin de siete minutos con una introduccin folk acstica The Jicks re-direccionados
Malkmus comenz a escribir Sparkle Hard en 2015, cuando decidi remodelar por completo su estudio casero y ponerse a componer nuevo material una vez acabada la sintona final de la serie Flaked, de Netflix. Las demos se grabaron en un solo da de abril, y el nuevo lbum comenz a gestarse en mayo de 2018 en los estudios Halfling de Portland, dirigidos por Chris Funk de The Decemberists, quien tambin produjo el disco.
