Con base de operaciones en Baltimore, Dan Deacon ha publicado desde 2003 una veintena de ttulos (entre discos de estudio, directos, EPs, singles, bandas sonoras), con cierto nomadismo en cuanto a sellos, si bien los dos ltimos LPs, America (2012) y Gliss Riffer (2015) ya fueron editados en Domino. “Mystic Familiar” es resultado de aos de trabajo obsesivo, juego y auto descubrimiento. Es, sin duda, su album mas emocional y trascendente, 11 canciones kaleidoscopicas de majestuosos synths-pop que expanden exponencialmente su sonido con imaginacin sin restricciones y una recin descubierta vulnerabilidad.
Compaero de batallas de Panda Bear, Caribou, The Soft Pink Truth, Battles o Future Islands y deudor de Raymond Scott, Taking Heads, DEVO, They Might Be Giants o Residents con Mystic Familiar da un salto propulsivo con los tambores ejecutados por robots y las melodas altsimas de “Sat By a Tree”, el sencillo que lo adelant. Es un cambio vulnerable en un cancionero lleno de personajes, metforas y modulaciones. Este lbum, enfocado en la voz es tambin el primero en el que cada cancin fue construida alrededor de un nico concepto- el Mystic Familiar, otro ser sobrenatural que llevamos con nosotros a todas partes en nuestra cabeza, que solo nosotros podemos escuchar y con quien vivimos nuestras vidas en una conversacin eterna.
