Beth Gibbons (Portishead) presenta “”Henryk Grecki: Symphony No. 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs), en directo junto a la orquesta sinfnica pblica de Polonia, dirigida por Krzysztof Penderecki. Tambin conocida como Sinfona de las canciones dolientes, Sinfona de las canciones tristes o Sinfona de las lamentaciones es una obra de tres piezas compuesta en 1976 y escrita para orquesta y soprano. Los textos se basan en (1) un lamento atribuido a la Virgen Mara, (2) un mensaje descubierto en la pared de una crcel de la Gestapo durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y (3) una cancin popular sobre una madre que busca a su hijo asesinado en levantamiento silesio de 1919. Todos tienen en comn la maternidad y la separacin de seres queridos por culpa de la guerra.
Hasta 1992 la obra no tuvo reconocimiento mundial; solo gracias al sello Nonesuch que la public y despach ms de un milln de copias la figura de Grecki se populariz. El director polaco Krzysztof Penderecki es uno de los compositores y directores de orquesta ms prestigiosos vivos y cuyas obras se han usado en bandas sonoras como El Resplandor o El Exorcista.
